Circular No 630

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Caracas, 30 November 2013 No. 630
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
First Announcement and Request for Information:
Old Boys of the Abbey School, Mount Saint Benedict, Trinidad.
General Gathering
We have been considering holding what could be the last general gathering of the all alumni of the college in 2014.
After much discussion since 2012, the consensus is that we meet in Trinidad, so that as part of the convention we can visit the site of the college which had such a profound impact on all of our lives.
There are some who because we have been scattered so far abroad have expressed their reservations about coming that far.  And some in their 70s and even 80s will find it difficult to make such a journey.   But over the next few months we hope to convince them that it will be worth it.  Surely we cant meet in the US to celebrate the memories which we will generate by standing in the places which we did as youngsters.
For the time being, we have to make some decisions by consensus and we would value any suggestions as to the following:
1.        What date in 2014 would be most convenient for you?
2.        What period of time should we plan for?
3.        What activities would you most want to be involved in?

Dear Attila & Brothers,
I am so sorry to read this.  I was having some problems with the internet here in Mexico.
Michael has been on my list for many years  Every Christmas, I would get an email from him, thanking me for the emails I sent him.
I was there for his last year just a kid at 12 yrs old.
May our brothers rest in peace.
Fulvio Cantore, so sorry to read this also, may God Bless Our Brothers and their Families at this time.
Take care, best regards, back to Canada on Monday,
Glen McKoy.

Dear Harry and Oscar,
These are just some of the emails I've been receiving with regard to the deaths of Michael and Fulvio, and I am passing them along to you both for your information.
Obviously, your brothers have struck a chord with their friends, classmates and colleagues at Mt. St. Benedict, and even though the years have passed, they're still remembered fondly.
Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of your brothers,
They will be missed.
If I might impose on you, I'd ask you this - would you like to write a paragraph for the record, about your two brothers and whatever you'd like to say about their lives, ambitions, hopes, successes, failures, dreams?
If you'd do this, I can guarantee to send your messages to all the Mount Old Boys worldwide, wherever they now live, and this might remove a burden from your shoulders.
May they both rest in peace.
Nigel

Oh no, not another one from my class!
First, Fulvio Cantore last week, and now Michael Laughlin.
My condolences to the family.
Michael was actually with me in the Form V class of 1969, not 1970.
I remember him as the singer in the school rock band, and as a trumpet player in the school marching band.
He was in the house of St Lawrence (green and white colours).
He liked to play cricket.

Gentlemen,
It has come to my attention today that Michael Laughlin - Class of 1970 - has died about one month ago, in Trinidad.
I'm told that he had died as a result of a brain tumour, but if anyone has any other information on the matter, perhaps you'd like to share it with us.
In fact, for the record, if anyone would like to share a memory or two about our brother and friend, please do so.
I'll combine whatever comes in to me, and will re-post it all, once I've completed the job.
May his soul rest in peace.
Nigel

Guys,
Peter Laughlin ("Tater) is a Trinidadian, and he lives with his wife, Patricia D'Arcy, in Sarasota, Florida.
He was a swimming star in his days at MSB, and his arch-rival and good friend was Richard Galt ("Turtle-Back").
There are two Michael Laughlins who attended school at MSB.
One is in Australia, and the other lived in Trinidad.
He was the younger brother of Harry Laughlin.
Here's a photograph of Peter Laughlin in the States:
I hope this helps.

Dear Nigel
Michael passed away 16th Aug.
After ups and downs of fighting brain cancer for about 12 months; at times during that period you would believe he hadn’t any cancer.
He died peacefully at home.
His family and friends gave much support, as well as the local cancer society, and the two funerals, Catholic and Hindu, were sincere.

Bless you, Father Harold, for your prayers and remembrance of Dion.
I slightly remember him as he was several years behind me.
May God bless his soul and also pour His love on his family.
Will be interested in hearing/reading about your perspectives about the social, economic and political state of our beloved Trinidad.
Everything one seems to read points to instability, crime and all the other evil things that mankind turns to in desperation, hunger and need,
Have a safe visit and good return,
George

Hi friends,
I, unfortunately, was unable to attend Dion Fakoory's Funeral Mass at St. Theresa's in Woodbrook yesterday, but as I promised yesterday, I drove to MSB this morning and prayed for Dion as I drove around our dear Abbey School.
Later I went into the Monastic enclosure and greeted Fr. Cuthbert and Max de Comarmond who both returned from Fr. Cutty's visit to Holland.
Fr. Christopher told me that Fr. Cutty stayed in hotels that were reasonably near to his relatives who no longer live in their homes but in Nursing Homes, due to their age and/or disabilities.
He looks so frail now.
As I was conversing with Bro. Paschal, a phone call came in indicating that Fr. Odo was ready to be discharged from the hospital where he had received successful surgery and ready to return to the Monastery.
A great Birthday gift for Fr. Odo, today on his Birthday.
Today is also the 16th Anniversary of Fr. Ildefons Schroots' death.
The monks were so warm to welcome me and encouraged me to return for a few days;
I assured them I will definitely do this.
Bro. Paschal who was my Novice master during my 6 years at MSB, reminded me, "Once a monk, always a monk".
True, I said, I can never give up my Monastic formation; it's in my blood and spiritual DNA.
I followed a Mass for Dion at Living Water yesterday.
God bless you all and "Pax in virtute"

Hi fellows,
This seems to be a Venezuelan mobile number:
+58 416 392 7772
I have dialled this number from Caracas 0416 392 772 and there is an answering machine to it.
So the number exists. I have left a message.
If no reply soon I will insist until I get an answer.
Cheers ,
Andres (Freddy)

Gentlemen,
A moment please, if you will.
I need a little help here.
Do you remember an Old Boy of MSB by the name of Nieto Rodriguez, possibly from Venezuela?
It seems that he had contacted us sometime ago via Kazim Abasali's website, and his name has now surfaced.
If you do remember him, perhaps you can tell me whatever you do know.
Apparently, he was a student at MSB between 1946 - 1952, and I'm trying to locate him. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Nigel,
This came when I had the stroke.
I was checking my old emails and came across.
Says he lives in Venezuela.

KAZ,
Has Nieto Rodriguez only now contacted you?
I never had his name until today, and I see he attended MSB 1946-52.
What does A6 mean please?
I see the answer is 00416 392-7772 which must mean it's a Toronto number, but when I called it, there's no response, and according to Google, it's unlisted.
Wonder where he lives / lived?
Any info you can give me would help.
